Centre Saku Koivu will continue his tenure as captain of the Montreal Canadiens.
The Canadiens on Monday re-signed Koivu, who was named the 27th captain of the storied franchise in 1999.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Koivu made $4.25 million in 2003-04.
Koivu had 14 goals and was third on the Canadiens with 55 points in 68 games in 2003-04. He spent last season in his native Finland, recording eight goals and eight assists in 20 games with TPS Turku.
The 30-year-old Koivu has produced 120 goals and 278 assists in 497 games with the Canadiens since being the 21st overall pick in the 1993 draft. He set career highs of 21 goals and 50 assists in 2002-03 to lead the team in scoring.
A survivor of non-Hodgkins lymphoma, Koivu received the Bill Masterton Trophy in 2002 as the NHL player most exhibiting perseverance, dedication and sportsmanship. After missing the first six months of that season with the disease, he returned for three regular-season games before leading the team with 10 points in 12 playoff games.
