With the addition of Sergei Gonchar, it's uncertain what role thingy Tarnstrom will play with the new-look Penguins. According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Tarnstrom could become expendable with Gonchar in town, but regardless, the offensive-minded blueliner is going to get a new contract shortly.
The Post-Gazette reports Tarnstrom and his agent, Mark Stowe, were hoping to get a new deal done prior to Friday's arbitration hearing in Toronto, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
"At this time, it's unlikely," Stowe told the paper, referring to the possibility of avoiding arbitration. Stowe said he is "always open for discussion," but the sides are not believed to have scheduled additional talks.
The Penguins have a gaping hole at center on their No. 2 line, and while Stowe believes Tarnstrom is in the Penguins plans, that void could conceivably be filled if the Pens are willing to trade Tarnstrom, who could be an unrestricted free agent next summer.
